Individuals As Home Cleaners
An individual is usually the cheapest option and if you can find someone reliable and concientious, then it can be a great solution. Cheapness has its pitfall, recruitment can be a pain if you dont have a friend to recommend someone to you. Whilst some "savvy" individuals are now obtaining CRB checks personally, not all are, so be sure to ask for this and review the actual certificate.
You need to be aware of a few things;
- You are the employer
- No CRB check - unless you ask for it!
- You provide the cleaning products
- You must provide adequate insurance cover
- No cover for holidays, sickness etc.
Becoming An Employer
As an employer you may have to register with HMRC for tax purposes, you need to register in any case to prevent you becoming liable or being fined in the future.

Expensive Cleaning Products
Providing the cleaning products is expensive, HomeMaid certainly couldnt use supermarket products for our home cleaning services due to the expense. It also takes a bit of training to know which products to use where and how much is effective. (too much is just a waste!) So unless they are experienced and/or trained you could waste a small fortune on home cleaning products.

Insurance Protection
Insurance is so important and I dont mean just home contents cover, what if your cleaner falls downstairs or off some step ladders? You will be liable for damages and loss of earnings. Thankfully this doesnt happen often but when it does it can be financially ruinous to the client. The area that causes most problems is acts of dishonesty, your home insurance policy maybe void as you have invited the person into your home.
